How I made ‘Overlooking the Valley’ for a Mary Shipp lesson

Not that this is by any way a masterpiece or anything close to it but I was looking through my box searching for something else & found more notes from Mary Shipp’s classes.  I had said it was my design but I was wrong – it is an adaptation. So, I thought I share how I made it.

I collected photos (this has a white fingerprint smudge on it-sorry) as Mary suggested to see learn about color & perspective.

Then, I sketched it. Drawing isn’t as difficult as it may seem. I took her advice & practiced techniques in Betty Edwards’ book, Drawing on the Right Side of Your Brain.

Then, I mapped out the areas.

Lastly, I selected stitches for the various areas.

And, then I stitched it. Not going to win any prizes but much was learned.

So enter the contest at gone stitching with planet earth- you might win! $25 entrance fee- use 5 planet earth threads – entrance fee includes threads-planet earth has single ply or stranded- all silks- plus use your stash!
the Theme is our world- it could be anything! see if your design could win. Practice designing on canvas- this would be perfect.

Hi Michele, I did look at the contest – I just don’t think I have time right now. It would be too much pressure at this time! I have other projects I’m working on & work has it’s own set of pressures. I am curious, is my piece considered an original design? Even though I copied a photo? Maybe with a design already prepared stitching with planet earth fibers would be doable. Either way, thanks for the compliment! Melita

I apologize for answering twice- I thought the first did not go through. It is still an original design because you are picking colors and stitches- mine is on 14 ct only because I am limited on time also.
