I didn’t think I ‘d have time to blog but I found this Framecraft ceramic beige bowl with gilded metal lid (on sale) today! The work is beautiful (not signed unless it is under the lid but I am not going to take it apart to look). And, the dish is in excellent condition. We’ve been out in Scottsdale, Arizona for the holiday & popped into an antique mall today. I really was amazed to find this gem for $5. We are taking a break after a van tour of the area & before dinner.

When I return home, I will share my experiences at 3 needlepoint stores – honestly, when I picked this location for vacation, I had no idea there were 3 stores so close to us! But, I found my color scheme for Bargello Techniques & will be using Vineyard Merino. I also found a couple of small painted canvases & one cross stitch chart. And, we went into the Heard Museum where we saw some lovely Native American pieces that I’ll share too.

Teddy Bear Ornament

My ANG Mainline Stitchers chapter had our annual holiday party a week ago. We all brought a dish & had dinner, brought holiday-themed pieces, and had a Secret Santa auction (a not so secret steal). I got this cut little teddy bear that worked up quickly (3 nights) & in time to join us for the holidays! Thanks Buff!!

The painted canvas was signed Rebecca. So, I assume it is Rebecca Woods (based on google search). It is a 1998 design numbered 509A. But, it doesn’t appear to be available on her website any longer.

Hopefully, everyone liked what they got but I know we all enjoyed the evening! A little wine (thanks Marnie & Yvonne), appetizers/food/dessert (everyone), & friends!!

Thanks to all of you for spending a little of your time here today to see Teddy. This is the last of my blogs for 2013. See you again in 2014. Happy Holidays everyone! And, hope you and yours heave a healthy New Year!! Extra special wishes go out to those near and far who are battling with health issues to find the strength to be strong during challenging times.

8 Sample Threads for Bargello

Here are all the sample stitches put together. Only the Silk n’ Ivory, Vineyard Merino (Wiltex Threads), and Planet Earth Silk have sufficient coverage for Bargello. Of those, the Vineyard Merino seems to cover just slightly more at the point of the holes. The other 2 provide just about identical coverage. The remaining 5 threads just don’t cover well enough unless you untwist the thread as Liz suggested but I didn’t try that.

Row 1: ThreadworX Vineyard Silk – ThreadworX Expressions

Row 2: Silk n’ Ivory – Pepper Pot

Row 3: Shepherd’s Silk – Vineyard Merino

Row 4: Vineyard Silk – Planet Earth Silk

8 Samples

TIP: I read in an ANG Yahoo message that if you thread Silk n’ Ivory one way it pills. If you thread it the other way it doesn’t. You take each end and twist it in your hand. Then, thread the end that splays more into the needle’s eye. I’ll have to try this!

Postscript: Liz has since done a comparison of more threads that is fantastic: http://lizartblog.blogspot.com/2015/11/bargello-threads.html and we both agree Silk n’ Ivory has sufficient coverage but Liz feels Vineyard Merino (Wiltex Threads) is marginal and she didn’t review Planet Earth Silk. And, I didn’t review Jumbuck (Dinky Dyes). Additional information is at https://www.lizartneedlepoint.com/working-with-bargello.html#/

Bargello Pine Trees

My ANG CyberPointer’s chapter started working on various ornaments using various types of stitching. My favorite was the Bargello Pine Trees.

When I went into my stash, I found a coordinated packet of ThreadworX threads. I switched overdyed floss from my stash which was a light blue to match the other threads better. And, I needed a contrasting dark for a row so I used Petite Very Blue. The wild blue from The Legacy Collection that was polyamide just didn’t fit in this piece. I ended up using (from outer rows inward with ThreadworX unless noted): 2 strands #8 braid white (71124), 4 strands overdyed floss light blue (1018), 1 strand #12 braid light blue (91015), 1 strand Expressions medium blue (224S), 2 strands #8 braid dark blue, 1 strand Vineyard Silk (V118), 1 strand Petite Very Velvet dark blue (V634), and overdyed Italian wool white (W842). And, 1 strand of #8 braid silver (71122) placed on the upper section.

As it ended up, I did run out of one thread & had to substitute but it really matched well enough. Can anyone see?

I forgot to mention that this is a free pattern from The Caron Collection (Caron-net.com). They offer quite a few really nice ones.

Sample Threads on 18-count for Bargello

I’m getting ready to start Bargello Techniques designed by Liz Morrow along with some of the CyberPointer’s members. I’m reading the instructions & testing threads. And, I decided to share my findings here partly because I can’t figure out how to get the second photo to post in the Yahoo group. VERY frustrating – I tried iPad, phone, and computer – not uploading. Anyway, . . .

Silk & Ivory (shown on the left) is compared with Pepper Pot (right) which looks a bit fuller than the picture but the coverage isn’t enough for Bargello. It has a great feel to it. I would love to use Pepper Pot for another project. They need to come out with more colors too – slightly limited especially compared with Silk & Ivory.

Silk & Ivory vs Pepper Pot

I have been using ThreadworX Expressions & ThreadworX Vineyard Silk in a small ornament using Bargello stitches & coverage is pretty good but I can see a little canvas peeking through. The Expressions is not my favorite. It is 50/50 cotton & rayon. It is being caught on the canvas and the twisting is difficult to control. So, I will never buy more of the Expressions but I do like Vineyard Silk although not for Bargello Techniques because of the coverage.

Taking a break from my current projects, I decided to work on this ornament as we enter the holiday season. As part of the ANG CyberPointer’s chapter, some members are working on ornaments and I liked this one best (since last year I’ve been wanting to get to it; http://www.caron-net.com/magfiles/magdecharts/magdech.html). Plus, I am in a Bargello phase.

When I went into my stash, I found the packet of ThreadworX which is a beautifully selected bag of threads (for Hanukkah or winter) from Thread Candy Studio. Great combo of blues, purple, & whites. I picked up the packet at Annie & Company in NYC earlier this year (subject of earlier blog).

I have found out that Bargello requires a thicker thread or multiple strands. So, I’m not sure there is enough in this bag. Well, I’ll figure it out as I go!

Sprats Head

I’m glad I practiced the Sprats Head because they really look nice without closing them all the way down the 2 sides of the triangle. I didn’t notice it on my ornaments until I’d stitched a couple in my practice ornament.

Initially, I planned on pulling out the orange of the overdyed thread but once I stitched the Amadeus, I wasn’t happy. I confirmed this with my chapter members who suggested going towards yellow.

Last Saturday, I made a trip to a Fireside Stitchery after a wonderful EGA Philadelphia Area Chapter luncheon in King Of Prussia as a guest to Carol T (ANG Apple NeedlePointer’s ).  Barbara Darlin presented her extremely entertaining program revealing Victorian fashion including undergarments (http://Unlacingthevictorianwoman.com). I would love to see her other programs too! What a delightful woman & so talented (she made many of her costumes). It was so nice of EGA to open it up to guests! Thanks again Carol!

And, I am so happy Betsy at Fireside steered me away from the yellow I initially selected in favor of the more golden yellows and a more subdued overdyed floss. I would have gone from too orange to too yellow. This is still yellow but not as yellow as I might have used. There are a lot of yellows to choose from! I got all the Sprats Heads done!!!!

Practice Ornaments

Our last ANG Mainline chapter meeting was organized so that we could practice Sprats Head & Amadeus for Pinwheels. But, not everyone is stitching that to use those diagrams so I wanted a program for everyone. I was glad to see so much participation.

For those not stitching Pinwheels, members not able to attend, & any of my blog readers, I obtained the ornament directions for everything from the ANG website. You need a 4″x4″ or 5″x5″ piece of canvas & some thread.

Go to Stitch of the Month:

ANG has started providing periodic web extras (http://www.needlepoint.org/magazine.php). The finishing and tassel making instructions can be downloaded:

  • Point-to-Point joining technique
  • Betsy’s cord and tassel making instructions.

While you are there, why not try the November 2013 web extra:

  • Star in the Meadow – A Petite Stocking designed by Pat Mazu.

Mine were stitched using diagrams from the Pinwheels directions. And, I used the tassel instructions from The Needlepoint Book by Jo Ippolito Christensen because I had it stitched before those website directions came out.

A Berlinwork Cardinal with Flowers

The flowers grew fast & I was able to take a finished cardinal to show my ANG Mainline Stitchers & ANG Keystone Garden Chapter (a 2nd area chapter I joined) this week. Everyone loved Susan Hoekstra’s piece which is from a small pilot class our Mainline chapter did for her 2014 Seminar class.

The flowers are a turkey work variation that I really enjoyed doing. Next time you see this it will be ‘finished’ – what to do with it?!?

A Berlin Work Cardinal, Background & Border

In case you have not seen the previous posts, this is Susan Hoekstra’s piece which is from a small pilot class our chapter did for her 2014 Seminar class. The background is an Irish Stitch Variation. There is only one place where I messed up and unless you look carefully, I doubt you will see it. It ended up being contained to a small area. The outside border frames it nicely. I’m so close now – it is exciting to see it grow!

Instead of studying for my error, please read my previous blog. My sister and her husband need your vote to have a chance at grant for their embroidery business. The deadline is Nov 15. So, please take a moment now! Your vote can get them to the next step. Thanks so much.
